James Sheets

April 21, 2014 — September 18, 2014

James F. Sheets, age 93, on the early morning hours of September 18, 2014 peacefully left this Earth to join his Heavenly Father and those who preceded him. He was born in Toledo to Percy and Anna (Reuter) Sheets on April 21, 1921 being the first of six children. After graduating from Springfield High School he traveled across the country riding the rails as a hobo. James worked for the United States Postal Service as a letter carrier for thirty six years and later drove bus for Toledo Public Schools for eleven years. During World War II he proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy. He served in the South Pacific theatre on the USS Nashville escorting General Mac Arthur to the Philippines Liberation. He crossed the International Date Line allowing him to celebrate his twenty first birthday twice. After the war, he met the love of his life, Jane, and after just five months they married. Their marriage lasted sixty years until Jane died in 2006. He took joy in helping others, loved the Lord, and was a longtime member of Cass Road Baptist Church where he held many offices, sang in the choir, taught Sunday school and Bible study. He was an avid organic gardener and longtime member of the Toledo Men's Garden Club, he was a flower enthusiast, loved fishing, house boating, bird watching, and being in nature. James was the longest surviving member of Adams Township Post 553 where he was a past commander. He loved being with family and friends, was quick witted, and loved a good joke or story.

He was preceded in death by his wife Jane, sons James (Tiger) and Jerry, granddaughter Veronica Mangus and her daughter Felicity, and sister Elizabeth Jacobs. Left to cherish his memory are his children, Jane (Ken) Laponis, Joel Sheets, Jill (Godofredo) Sheets, Jann (Dean Langworthy) Siwa, brothers Kenneth and John (Marie), sisters Jean Peters and Sally Waterman, grandchildren, Jay, Julia, Jolene, Justin, Joshua, Patrick, Steve, and Joe, six great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and relatives.
