J. Thomas "Tom" Schaffer, age 73, of Temperance, Michigan, passed away on Tuesday, February 7, 2017 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio - Toledo, where he was surrounded by his loving family. He was born on March 13, 1943 to Irwin and Bonnie (Porter) Schaffer in Cleveland, Ohio.
He graduated from Euclid High School in Euclid, Ohio and went on to the University of Toledo where he earned his Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering. There he met the love of his life, Janis "Jan" (Palmer) Schaffer. Throughout the years he worked at Schemenauer Manufacturing, in Holland, OH; DeVilbiss Company in Toledo, OH; Instrumentation Laboratory in Ann Arbor, MI. He was most recently employed at AW-TC in Ann Arbor, MI.
Tom loved nature and being outdoors. Camping, hiking and kayaking were among his favorite activities. He spent endless hours in the Toledo Area MetroParks over the years. Tom loved building and fixing things and almost always had a tool in his hand. The most important thing to him in the world was his family and his children. His deep faith in God carried him through the three years that he endured while battling cancer.
Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 49 years, Jan Schaffer; children, Danielle (Joe) Juarez, Jeff (Jen) Schaffer and Tim Schaffer; grandson, Evan Schaffer; siblings, Bonnie Jean Schaffer and Linda Schaffer; sister in law, Suzy Palmer and canine companion, Murphy. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Charles Schaffer.
At this time there are no formal services for Tom. In the spring there will be a Celebration of his Life in one of his favorite MetroParks.
Tom's family would especially like to thank the nurses and staff at the Hickman Cancer Center as well as the staff at H.O.A. for taking such great care of Tom.
A special thanks to the pastor and congregation at Pilgrim Church for their encouragement and prayers.
