James R. Brown, age 86, of Toledo, passed away Tuesday, February 8, 2012. He was born on November 3, 1925 to Clint and Bessie (Templeton) Brown in Cooleemee, N.C. James enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942 at age 17 for 2 ½ years in the South Pacific sailing on the St. Louis, also known as Lucky Lou. He received 5 bronze stars and a Presidential Citation. James retired from Con Rail Railroad several years ago. He enjoyed gardening, garage sales, fishing, boating and playing cards at Senior Centers. Last year he had the honor of going to Washington D.C. on Honor Flight of Northwest Ohio, which he thoroughly enjoyed with the other veterans.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary; granddaughter, Debbie; and 13 siblings. James is survived by his son, James (Sue); daughter, Sherry (Michael, Sr.) Earl; grandchildren, Chrisy (John) Rupp, Vicki (Jason) Masterson, Laurie Earl, Mike Earl, Jr.; great-grandchildren, Megan, Logan, Austin, Johnny, Ryan, Grady and Macy; brother-in-law, Roger Gibson; sister-in-law, Barbara Michalski; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive guests on Saturday from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4150 W. Laskey Rd. (419-473-0300) with Funeral Services beginning at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home. Interment will follow in Toledo Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make donations are asked to consider Promedica Hospice, 5200 Harroun Rd., Sylvania, OH 43560, who provided wonderful care and are angels on Earth.
The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to all of James' doctors and nurses in the I.C.U. at Flower Hospital. They gave the best care one could ask for. You're all very special and we thank you for that!
