James P. "Jim" Cherry, age 66, of Toledo, passed away on Wednesday, April 29, 2015 at Ebeid Hospice in Sylvania. He was born on August 24, 1948 to William M. and Bernetta (Lemle) Cherry in Toledo. Jim proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force as a Staff Sergeant, having served in Libya during the Vietnam War. He married Midge (Isser) Cherry on May 17, 1971 and she survives. He graduated from Rogers High School, Class of 1966. Jim worked for G.M. Powertrain for 24 years as a welder, retiring in 2009. He was a proud-lifetime member of the UAW, Local 14 and also had served on the Veteran's Committee for G.M. Powertrain. Jim was a lifelong member of the American Legion Post #553 and was also a member of St. Clement Church.
Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife, Midge; children, Keith (Wendy) Cherry, Jeanine (Charlie) Franklin and Jill (Pete) Gooding; grandchildren that will dearly miss their, "Papa," Jorden (Brad) Pelland, DJ and Dominic Franklin, T'Ann and Cassidy Cherry, Stephanie and Jenna Hawary and Ava Gooding; great-granddaughter, Alannah; siblings, Carol (Jim) Canterbury, Charlotte Wall, Richard Cherry and Al (Bonnie) Cherry; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and best friends, Hank, Tom, Bob, Marlene and Kathy. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, Harold and best friends Al and Big John.
The family will receive guests on Sunday, May 3, 2015 from 2-8:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4752 Heatherdowns Blvd. (419-381-1900). A Scripture Service will begin in the funeral home on Sunday at 7:00 p.m. followed by American Legion Services. His Funeral Mass will begin Monday, May 4, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Clement Church, 3030 Tremainsville Rd., Toledo, OH with visitation in the narthex of the church beginning at 9:30 a.m., Rev. James Auth officiating. Interment will follow in Springfield Township Cemetery.
