James L. "Jim" Gerding, age 82, of Toledo's Old South End Area, passed away Friday, September 27, 2013 at Regency Hospital of Toledo surrounded by his loving children. He was born on July 4, 1931 to Louis and Katherine (Sergent) Gerding in Toledo. Jim was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force serving his country proudly from 1951 – 1955, honorably discharged as a Sergeant. Throughout his life, he worked at L.O.F. Co., Gibson-Stewart Co., AP Parts Corp. and retired from Cantwell Machinery Co. Jim loved to dance, played federation baseball and softball, was on many dart teams and was always the best dressed guy around. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Jim married Alice Curson in 1956, and their marriage lasted 20 years; blessing him with his closest friends, his children, Scott, Andrea (Dave) Mingione, Rebecca (Doug) Collins, Roberta Snider, Michael and David (Kate); 15 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; brother, Walter Gerding; sister, Lois Langlois; and many nieces, nephews and dear friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Kathryn Gerding; sisters, Pat Cox and Judy Behrens; brother-in-law, Robert Behrens; and sister-in-law, Deloris Gerding.
The family will receive guests on Wednesday from 3 – 8:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4150 W. Laskey Rd., Toledo (419-473-0300) with a Scripture Service beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the funeral home. Mass of Christian Burial will begin Thursday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 5373 Main St., Sylvania, Ohio 43560. Interment will follow in Historic Woodlawn Cemetery.
