James Edward Holmes, Sr. was born September 27, 1927, to the late Wess and Mary Holmes in Vaiden, Mississippi. He was the 11th of 13 children born to this union and the last remaining. James was preceded in death by one daughter, Barbara Lynn Holmes, one grandson James Elliott Holmes, 5 brothers and 7 sisters. James made his transition to be home with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on January 13, 2018 in Heartland at ProMedica surrounded by family.
James loved singing and traveled throughout the South singing with a quartet.
In 1948, James married Rosalee Rutledge and to this union five children were born, James Jr., Deborah, Larry, Ron and Barbara.
Upon relocating and settling in Toledo in 1949, James was employed as an Road Contractor for Stryker Paving many years before retiring due to failing eyesight. James was an avid fan of the Detroit Tigers. You could visit him, and he'd be listening to the Detroit Tigers on the radio and knew every stat about each Detroit Tigers player.
In April 1999, upon returning from his Sister Inez's funeral, his daughter Deborah presented him the plan of Salvation which he received.
James leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Rosalee Holmes, son James Jr. of Richmond, VA, daughter Deborah of Toledo, OH, Larry of Columbus, OH, and Ron (Twana) of Cedar Hill, TX. Grandchildren, Lamont Rivers, Laticia Holmes and Shannon Davis of Toledo, OH. Lamar Rivers of Columbus, OH, Meika Holmes-Davis (Raymond) of Hampton, VA; Joshua Holmes and Joyner and Ronnie Holmes of Cedar Hill, TX. 18 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews, who fondly called him "Uncle Jamie.
