Jim graduated from Whitmer High School and received his Masters' degree from BGSU. He was a teacher and supervisor of Special Education for Washington Local Schools. Jim had complete confidence in his staff which allowed them to pursue their strong points. While at Washington Local Jim was very involved and held many offices, including the presidency, of the Teachers' Association of Washington Local Schools.
Another of his interests was chess. He coached chess at Whitmer and his teams were quite successful including winning state championships. He was a member of the U.S. Chess Federation and organized high school contests in the area.
