James Essex

July 25, 1945 — November 21, 2015

James Michael Essex, age 70, completed his journey on Saturday, November 21, 2015.

Jim grew up in North Toledo and attended St. Francis De Sales grade school and Central Catholic High School. As a young man, very athletic, an unknown bit of information, Jim was approached by Scouts for his baseball talent. He chose to go into the Navy. Jim served 4 years on an Ammunition Ship, serving his country honorably during the Vietnam War. Shortly after his discharge he became a barber, and then went on to work for the City of Toledo Department of Street, Harbor and Bridges. Jim moved on and became a member of the "Quality Circle Initiative", a program which encouraged employees to find workable solutions to their problems. Jim proved very adept at his position as a facilitator often speaking publicly to groups.

Jim was a very devoted father, involved with his children's education and sports. He freely dispensed his wisdom of life to the many friends who stopped by and often for a free haircut. For Jim, his Catholic faith embraced his life in word and action.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents; Joseph and Julia (Turby) Essex, siblings; Elizabeth, Josephine, Rose Rombach, John, and Michael. He is survived by his daughter, Nathalia (Steven) Meyers, sons, Justin and Nicholas Essex and Barry Waldfogel, Kathy Essex, mother to Nathalia, Justin, and Nicholas, grandchildren, Max and Ben Meyers and Asher and Amanda Waldfogel, sisters, Mary and Sharon Essex and Juilana Bagley, brothers David and Joe Essex, and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive guests on Friday, November 27, 2015 from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4150 W. Laskey Rd. 419-473-0300. A Mass of Resurrection will be held on Saturday at St. Adalbert Catholic Church at 11:00 a.m. with a visitation 1-hour prior to services. Burial to follow at Mt. Carmel Catholic Cemetery. May God welcome him home with open arms. You are loved and will be missed.
