James E. Sorg

James E. "Jim" Sorg, age 88, of Toledo, passed away on Sunday, April 21, 2013 at Aspen Grove Assisted Living in Lambertville, Michigan. He was born on May 6, 1924 to Edward and Florence (McLaughlin) Sorg in Fremont, Ohio. Jim married Janet Sorg on August 23, 1947 in Fremont and she survives.
Jim proudly served in the U.S. Army during WWII in the 44th Infantry Division. He was a 1st Scout behind the enemy lines and he received the Bronze Star medal and the Combat Infantry Badge. Jim graduated from the Dayton Art Institute in 1951 as a commercial artist. He was a free-lance graphic designer in the Toledo area for over 30 years and for a number of years he worked at Coen & Sorg.
With his artistic ability, during his retirement Jim became an extensive woodcarver, carving mostly ducks and small birds. He was a member of Black Swamp Woodcarvers, St. Catherine of Siena and VFW Post 606.
He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Janet; children, Edward (Kathy) Sorg, Ronald (Susan) Sorg, Stephen (Tammy) Sorg, Nancy (Bill) Sulewski, Rebecca (Jack) Collins, Jennifer (Bob) Shepler and Thomas (Melissa) Sorg; 17 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren and sister, Joan Ruffing. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Ellen Wilhelm and Patricia Snyder and brother, William Sorg.
The family will receive guests on Wednesday, April 24, 2013 from 2:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4150 W. Laskey Rd. (419-473-0300). A Rosary will be recited in the funeral home Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. Funeral Services will begin in the funeral home Thursday, April 25, 2013 at 9: 15 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. in St. Catherine of Siena Parish, 4555 North Haven Ave., Toledo, Ohio with Rev. Francis J. Speier officiating.
Memorial Contributions may be made to St. Catherine of Siena, Promedica Hospice or to a charity of the donor's choice.
The Sorg family would like to specially thank the nurses and staff at Aspen Grove Assisted Living and Promedica Hospice for the love and diligent care they provided to Jim.
