James G. Carr

October 31, 1925 — November 3, 2018

James G. Carr, 93, of Toledo, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 3, 2018 surrounded by his loving family. He was born October 31, 1925 to Charles B. and Loretta (Gable) Carr in Toledo. Jim was a devoted husband, caring father, man of strong faith, and loyal friend. His ready smile and "Jim-enese" one liners brightened the day of all who knew him.

Jim graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1944 where he played varsity beginning his freshman year, and at one time lettered in five sports the same year. His athletic promise was cut short by World War II. Jim served in the U.S. Navy aboard the LCS III until the war's end. Upon his return, he attended the University of Toledo, joined the Toledo Fire Department as a firefighter and later as a fire inspector with the city's Fire Prevention Bureau. Jim retired in 1977. He was primarily an agent for the Nationwide Insurance Company, retiring in 1987.

A man of deep faith, he was a devout parishioner at St. Agnes and Christ the King Catholic Churches, becoming well recognized in later years as the man who opened the door after Mass.

Jim was an avid golfer and champion bridge-player. He loved to travel and was especially fond of spending winter months in Fort Myers, Florida. In later years, he enjoyed Friday trips to the Hollywood Casino in Toledo.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 53 years, Lois; his brother, Charles B. Carr, Jr.; and sister, Virginia Shondal. Jim is survived by loving children, Lori (David) Hersh, Colleen (Michael) Lehmann, John (Mary Lou) Carr, Mary (Paul) Chwialkowski, James "Pete" (Beth) Carr, and Timothy (Jennel) Carr; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; his sister-in-law, Jacqueline Craig; and dear friend, Nancy Einhart; and his special nieces and nephews.

The family will receive guests on Wednesday, November 7, 2018 from 2 – 8:00 p.m. at Newcomer – West Sylvania, 3655 King Rd., Toledo 43617 (419-392-9500) with Last Alarm at 6:45 p.m. followed by the Rosary being recited at 7:00 p.m. in the funeral home. Prayers will begin at 9:00 a.m. Thursday, November 8, 2018 in the funeral home followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church, 4100 Harvest Lane, Toledo 43623. Interment will follow in Resurrection Cemetery.
