James Edward Burkett, 54, of Perrysburg, Ohio, passed away Monday, January 30th, surrounded by family at ProMedica Ebeid Hospice after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer.
The greatest joys in Jim's life came from his children, Benjamin, Carrie and Peter. Susan, wife of 31 years, met Jim at Maumee High School and the two married shortly after graduating from Bowling Green State University. He is also survived by his parents, Bill and Sue Burkett, of Waterville; his two brothers, Bill (Peggi) Burkett, of Whitehouse and Scott (Cathy) Burkett, of Maumee, as well as many loving uncles, aunts, cousins, nephews, nieces and friends.
Jim was a passionate man who enjoyed spending time with family and being outdoors. When "Jimmy", "Jimbo", "Jumbo", "Uncle Jim", "UJ", "Bo" or "Jamesy" wasn't hunting, he was fishing. He was also a proud member of Perrysburg Boat Club. If Jim wasn't down by the Maumee River then he was consumed by sports. Jim won the All-NLL and All-Ohio Award for third base with a batting average of .447. He also won the All-NLL Offensive Lineman Award and the NLL Lineman of the Year Award in football. Jim was inducted into the Maumee High School Hall of Fame in 2010 and was the first to be awarded the Jake Wiciak Adult Contributor Award for CYO. He was football commissioner for six years in addition to coaching hundreds of kids.
Jim was employed by Owens Corning Roofing and Asphalt as a Bura Business Manager and has a lifetime of significant accomplishments in the roofing industry, authoring several patents.
The family welcomes friends to gather for a visitation on Thursday, February 2nd from 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Newcomer Funeral Home, 4752 Heatherdowns Blvd, Toledo, Ohio. Funeral Services for Jim will begin Friday, February 3rd at 10:30 a.m. at Saint Rose Catholic Church, 215 E. Front St., Perrysburg. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery.
The family would like to give special thanks to their dear friend Brian Miller, MD, Jeffrey Muler, MD and his team and the ProMedica Home Health Care nurses and pharmacists.
