James A. "J.R." Roenick, Sr., age 71, of Toledo, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, October 20, 2015 at his home. He was born on February 24, 1944 to Lester and Mary Jane (Ewing) Roenick in Toledo. Throughout the majority of J.R.'s life he was active in different communities as a public servant, working on local fire departments and police departments. Most recently, he retired from the Lucas County Sheriff Department after nearly 30 years of service. He was a Police Firearms Instructor for many years for the Sheriff Department as he was a talented marksman.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Rita (Tolson) Roenick; children, James (Angela) Roenick, II and Dawn (Alan) Welch; step-children, Brenda (Barry) Stotler, Charles Wilhelm and Thomas (Karen) Wilhelm; grandchildren, Madison, Zachary, Nicholas (Marissa), Corey, Zackary, Destiny, Kaitlin, Kelsey and Zachary; great-granddaughters, Brooklynn and Hailey; sister, Kristie (John) Moore; step-brother, Gary Moyer; former spouse and friend, Carol Polter; many brothers and sisters in arms from the Sheriff Department.
The family will receive guests on Monday, October 26, 2015 from 2-8:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4150 W. Laskey Rd. (419-473-0300). Funeral Services will begin in the funeral home on Tuesday, October 27, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Jerry Craig officiating. A Last Call service will be rendered at the funeral home following the services. Interment will follow in Toledo Memorial Park.
