Jack Alvin Canning

April 20, 1928 — June 16, 2021

Jack Alvin Canning, 93, was called into the presence of the Lord on June 16, 2021 at his daughter's home surrounded by loving family. He was born in Columbus, Ohio, on April 20, 1928 to Faye (nee Deitt) and George Canning, Jr. As a young adult later living in Toledo, Jack met his favorite dance partner, Joan Stachowski, whom he married in 1950.

Jack served in the U.S. Army in Korea from 1953-1955. Following his service to our country, he earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Toledo, followed by a master's degree in the same discipline. Jack worked many years as an engineer at SSOE in downtown Toledo. Eventually, he went into business for himself, founding Jack Canning & Associates. After retirement, Jack stayed busy by teaching math at Owens Community College.
He was a former member of both Regina Coeli and Christ the King Catholic parishes in Toledo.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Joan (in 2006); his son, Michael Canning (1999); and his brother and sister, George Canning and Connie Pearson; four grandchildren, Evan, Sean, Evan and Josh; and special friend and companion, Bonnie. Jack is survived by his son Chris (Kathie) Canning; his daughter Lorie (Ray) Krupp; 14 grandchildren, David, Michael, Mary, Steven, Kelly, Joe, Laurette, Angie, Drew, Cassie, Abbie, Jessica, Sara, and Isabelle; 25 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandson; and former daughter-in-law Debbie (Dennis) Mahon.

Jack's family would like to extend a special thank you to Lucy and Bonnie from Comfort Keepers in Tiffin, Ohio, who were so kind to him in the months preceding his passing. They would also like to thank the caring staff of Heartland Hospice.

The family will receive guests on Monday, June 21, 2021 from 4 – 8:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home – Northwest Chapel, 4150 W. Laskey Rd., Toledo (419-473-0300). Funeral Services will begin Tuesday, June 22, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. in the funeral home. Entombment will follow in Ottawa Hills Memorial Park.
