Howard C. Mercer, age 84, of Monclova, formerly of Sylvania Township for over 40 years, passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's, Saturday, March 29, 2014 at home surrounded by loving family. He was born on November 2, 1929 to Howard D. and Mildred (Ray) Mercer. Howard was a veteran of the U.S. Army with the 542nd Engineer Company in Ft. Scott, CA. He received a National Defense Service and Good Conduct Medals before being honorably discharged. Howard worked as a Civil Engineer throughout his career retiring from Owens Corning after 16 years. He enjoyed bowling, was a Boy Scout leader of Troop #268 and was an avid car collector; including over 50 classic cars. Howard was a member of the FOP Lodge #40. He loved the time spent at the cottage with his family, especially water skiing and boating. Howard and his wife rescued dogs for Planned Pethood for over 25 years, saving hundreds of canines over the years.
Howard is survived by his loving wife of almost 50 years, Charman Mercer; children, Timothy Mercer and Walter Boyle; and granddaughter, Alisa Boyle. He was preceded in death by his parents and step-mother, Fran Mercer.
The family will receive guests on Wednesday from 2 – 8:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4150 W. Laskey Rd., Toledo (419-473-0300). Funeral Services will begin Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home. Entombment will follow in Ottawa Hills Memorial Park.
