Herbert E. Hart

February 3, 1939 — February 13, 2014

Herbert E. Hart, known to all his friends as, "Bud," age 75, of Toledo, passed away on Thursday, February 13, 2014 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio. For 20 years he bravely battled emphysema that eventually led to lung cancer. Born in 1939 in Attica, Ohio, he was raised in South Toledo.

At the tender age of 17 he began his lifelong love of trains and started working at "the railroad." First New York Central RR, followed by Penn Central then Conrail. Bud's love for his country led him to serve in the United States Air Force, Army, Air Force Reserve and Army Reserve. Serving in Greenland sparked his love of travel. In 1966, fate led Bud to a chance meeting on October 1st to a young lady by the name of Mary Lou Shoviak. Just 24 days later, on October 25 they married and spent the next 48 years as man and wife.

Along the way they shared the love of animals including the breeding, raising and showing of Dachshunds and Whippets. Later came to rescuing Greyhounds and feeding every squirrel in West Toledo. Bud also was a "technology enthusiast." If it was new, he had to have it and master it. That included video games, computers, phones and electronics.

Bud and Mary had one daughter, Tami (Hart) Gilmore; together with her husband, Steve, they gave Bud and Mary Lou five grandchildren, Aaron, Ariel, Autumn, Deacon and Dylan; four great-grandchildren, Rookland, Charlie, Rhory and Kale (by order of "seniority"!). Aaron, Bud's oldest grandchild gave him his moniker that he was known by the past 31 years, "Grumpy." He also was a decade's long driver of field trips and school party attendee for that motley crew.

Bud never saw a sport he didn't like. His loves were all things Ohio State, Nascar, especially the Hendricks boys and Red Wing hockey. When a game wasn't on he was a reality tv junkie.

He made us all laugh with his offbeat jokes and "grumpy-ism's" and will be missed by all.

A Private showing for the immediate family was already held. Friends are invited to join the family on Tuesday from 1 – 5:00 p.m. at the UAW Hall on Jackman Rd. for food and fellowship. The Newcomer Funeral Home, Toledo (419-473-0300) assisted the family with professional services.
