Henrietta "Babe" Margrette (Nelson) Downey, age 101, a longtime resident of Holland, Ohio went home to the Lord, Sunday June 8, 2014 at Spring Meadows Care Center, Holland, Ohio. Henrietta was born September 14, 1912, in Spokane, Washington, to Edwin and Henrietta (Donsizen) Nelson.
She was united in marriage on April 9th, 1931 to George Rutherford Downey, Jr. in Bowling Green, Ohio.
She was a salesperson with the Hoover Company for more than 20 years, retiring at the age of 80.
Henrietta traveled extensively throughout the world, all over Europe, and the United States and as a child with Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus as her uncle Conrad Jesperson was the leader of their band. She enjoyed going to the casinos, playing cards and all outdoor sporting activities. Henrietta was the Matriarch of the family and was present at all of her grandchildren's births. She was full of love and spread her love to everyone, with an unbelievable sense of humor. Henrietta was the mother of the "Downey Triplets," which were the first set of triplets born at Toledo Hospital.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 23 years, George Rutherford Downey Jr.; sons: Edwin N. Downey and Dennis J. Downey; daughters: Diane J. Barnes and Deane Luce; daughter-in-law: Marlene Downey
She is survived by her sons, Mike (Nancy) Downey and George Downey III; grandchildren, Gary Downey, Denise Downey, Cindy Downey, Eddie Downey, Danny Downey, Sylvia "Bunny" Gunther, Amanda Downey, Kelly Gates, Daron Downey, Richard Frye, David Frye, Beth Keeler, Deborah Reim, Matthew Barnes, Michael Barnes, Rolland Barnes, Genesis Downey, Julie Ragheb, Michael Downey, Jr.; 39 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren.
The family will receive guests Friday, June 13, 2014 from 2-8 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4752 Heatherdowns Blvd. (419-381-1900). Funeral Services will begin Saturday, June 14, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. in the funeral home with interment to follow in Toledo Memorial Park, Sylvania, OH.
The family requests memorial contributions to Senior Independence Hospice in Henrietta's memory.
