Helen M. (Chorba – Kroon) Mahen
Helen M. Mahen, age 94, of Toledo, Ohio passed away January 22, 2015 at Lutheran Village at Wolfcreek. She was born January 9, 1921 in Toledo, Ohio to Joseph and Mary (Molnar) Chorba and grew up in the Birmingham neighborhood. After high school, she apprenticed at local beauty salons and then went to New York for additional beauty school classes. At the age of 25, Helen purchased and operated a Harper Method Beauty Shop, located at 222 Erie Street for 7 years. After her daughter Robin was born she sold the business and settled in South Toledo with her husband, James Kroon. Helen practiced to become a golfer with a 18 handicap at Heatherdowns C.C. After Jim's passing, she married Roy Mahen who also preceded her in death. Helen was a wonderful mother and grandmother – smart, independent, gentle and generous her advice was always worth listening to.
Helen is survived by her daughter, Roberta A. (Daniel) Kennedy; granddaughter, Laura (Troy) Pittenger; great grandchildren, Jack, Wesley and Katherine Pittenger and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Helen was preceded in death by her siblings, Joseph, Louis, George, Arnold, Ernest Chorba and Wilma O'Connor.
The family will receive guests Tuesday, January 27, 2015 from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm at Newcomer Funeral Home - SW Chapel, 4752 Heatherdowns Blvd. (419-381-1900). Funeral Services will begin Tuesday at 1:00 pm. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Lake Township Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice in Helen's memory.
