Helen L. Deal, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on February 2, 2025, in Toledo, Ohio, just months shy of her 90th birthday. Born on July 27, 1935, in Toledo, Helen was the last of six siblings, leaving behind a rich legacy of love and kindness that will be cherished by her family and friends.
Helen devoted her life to her family. As a loving homemaker, she poured her heart into caring for her husband, David A. Deal, with whom she shared a remarkable 66 years of marriage, and their daughters, Cheri and Vicki. Helen met Dave, the love of her life, in catechism in the seventh grade. Her nurturing spirit extended beyond her immediate family; she was a source of unwavering support for her daughters throughout their lives, always encouraging them to pursue their dreams. Helen took immense pride in her daughters' accomplishments, particularly their success as teachers, a testament to the values she instilled in them.
A proud breast cancer survivor, Helen’s determination and strength inspired many in her community. Her generous spirit shone brightly through her lifelong dedication to volunteering. She committed over 20 years of service at Toledo Hospital and was an active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, where her caring nature and leadership were felt warmly by many. Helen was passionate about giving back, often putting others' needs above her own; her kindness and compassion were hallmarks of her life.
In her professional life, Helen worked as a secretary for several lawyers and realtors, as well as at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, where she was admired for her organizational skills and warmth. Beyond her professional endeavors, she had a true passion for decorating her home, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere that welcomed loved ones. Whether it was wallpapering or making curtains, her attention to detail in crafting a cozy space exemplified her love for family gatherings.
Helen enjoyed traveling with her husband, Dave, exploring new places while visiting family and friends who held a special place in her heart. Even as a devoted homebody, she made every place feel like home, leaving lasting memories for everyone who had the joy of sharing time with her. Helen kept life long friendships with her friends, the Canasta Club from high school and many long term couples friendships from St. Paul's.
She is survived by her two daughters, Cheri Deal, Vicki Holmes and her husband Rob. Helen cherished her role as a grandmother to Samantha Potter and her husband Adam, and Emily Duffey and her husband Collin. Her legacy continues through her great-grandchildren, Wren, Olive, Eliza, and Lincoln. Additionally, she is remembered by her brother-in-law Gary Deal and his wife Kay, along with extended family members Sandy Nagucki, a host of nieces, nephews, and many other special people.
As we gather to honor Helen’s remarkable life and spirit, we are reminded of the countless ways she touched our hearts. She will be greatly missed but will forever remain in the memories of all who had the privilege of knowing her. Visitation and funeral services will take place on February 7, 2025, at Newcomer Funeral Home in West Sylvania, Toledo.
