Harold E. Samberg, Jr., 91, passed away on April 12, 2015 in his long- time residence in Toledo. He was born on July 19, 1923 in Toledo. Harold's friendship with Rita began in fourth grade at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Elementary School and continued on through high school. Harold attended Libbey High School, and was a member of the National Honor Society. He graduated in 1941. In November 1942, Harold enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps 1942 and became a Second Lieutenant. Soon after training, he left for active duty as a pilot of a B24 Liberator Bomber. Harold flew 17 missions over Germany prior to being shot down over occupied Austria and was forced to parachute. Harold was quickly taken prisoner. He spent eleven months as a Prisoner of War and was liberated in May, 1945. Harold was awarded a Purple Heart in 2008. He had previously been awarded the Air Medal and Prisoner of War, amongst others.

Harold is best known for his love and devotion to family. He spent many happy days beginning in the 1930's with family and friends at their very special family place in northern Michigan (Lake Emma). His children will always remember and cherish the time spent hunting, fishing, shooting, boating, walking in the woods, trail riding and playing games in the cabin.

Harold was passionate about learning and reading. He was an excellent Bridge player earning Master Points.

It was his family's privilege to have him as a husband, son, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and we will miss him more than we can say.

The family would like to thank the caregivers who made it possible to honor Harold's wish to remain in his home.
