Guenther F. Buenning
Guenther Buenning, age 83, of Toledo, died Sunday, September 17, 2006 at his home, surrounded by is family. Born in Nordenham, Germany, Mr. Buenning and his family immigrated to the United States in 1962, settling in Toledo in 1965.
Mr. Buenning was the Shop Superintendent of UT's Department of Physics and Astronomy for 22 years. He designed and built instruments for research at both UT and MCO. His main goal was to make instruments that worked perfectly and there was never anything he could not design or build.
In recognition of his accomplishments the Department of Physics and Astronomy bestowed upon Mr. Buenning the Sigma Xi Honor Award in 1983, making him the first nonacademic to receive this award. The University further honored Mr. Buenning with the honorary title of Master Machinist Emeritus when he retired from UT in 1988.
Mr. Buenning's devotion to the University led him and John Georgia, former Electronics Technician in the Physics Department, to rebuild the Tower Clock. After meeting with the President of the University and outlining his plans, Mr. Buenning donated hundreds of hours of his own time simply because he believed a University's clock is an integral part of the campus.
Mr. Buenning enjoyed traveling, especially cruising with his family, gardening and working in his basement workshop.
He was a life member of the UT Alumni Association, a member of the Greater Beneficial Union and a founding member of the Schuetzenverein.
Mr. Buenning is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Alice; daughters, Rita Kristiansen and Inge Buenning and granddaughter, Jennifer Jongen.
