Greg D Smith

January 1, 1946 — January 14, 2025

Toledo, Ohio

Greg D. Smith, a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and successful entrepreneur, passed away on January 14, 2025, in Toledo, Ohio, where he was born on January 1, 1946. He leaves behind a legacy marked by hard work, commitment, and a genuine passion for life.

Greg was known as one of the hardest working individuals in his field. He was the owner/operator of Greg Smith Trucking LTD, where he logged over five million miles without a single incident, testament to his steadfast dedication and unmatched professionalism. Before venturing into his own business, he made significant contributions while working for NSL. His commitment to excellence extended to his adventurous side, where he owned Banana Winds Sailing Charters based out of Toledo Beach Marina and Port Clinton, Ohio.  Greg held USCG Master Captain License.  This venture blossomed into his true passion, allowing him to explore some of the world’s most beautiful waters, including the North Channel, throughout the Great Lakes, and on numerous trips to Miami and the British Virgin Islands.

Greg’s personality was characterized by his direct approach to life. He had a unique perspective that there was simply no other option but to do things right the first time. This strong work ethic not only shaped his career but also inspired those around him; starting with his sons.  As a mentor, Greg sought to uplift others, encouraging them to give their best in all endeavors. He took great pride in his work and the friendships he developed throughout his career, which he cherished deeply.  Greg belonged to the dive shop Aqua Hut for many years, there he was a part of the Fat Boy Gorilla Divers, where he dove all over and loved it. In more recent years, he explored places on land with his Harley and his Toledo H.O.G. family.  This sparked unending laughs and close friendships.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Greg proudly served his country during the Vietnam War era with the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Kittyhawk CV63 as a boatswain's mate. His military service reflected his commitment to duty, honor and love for country.

Greg is survived by his devoted wife of 44 years, Patricia Smith; his two sons, Jeremiah Smith and his wife Samantha, and Doug Smith and his wife Rebecca; and his cherished grandchildren, Serenity, Jiana, Logan, Noah, and Emma. He is also survived by his sister Judith Tandler and his mother Jeanette Berglund.

His joyful spirit, love of laughter, and strong connections with family and friends will forever be remembered. The impact he made on those around him is immeasurable, and he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Memorial contributions may be made on behalf of Greg to your charity of choice. A celebration of life will be held at a later date, please check back for details.
