Gerald Lee Grimes

June 17, 1946 — August 17, 2024

Temperance, Michigan

Gerald Lee Grimes, age 78, of Temperance, Michigan, passed away August 17, 2024 in the comfort of his home surrounded by loved ones. Gerald was born June 17, 1946, in Toledo, Ohio, to the late Robert and Kathryn (Freed) Grimes.

Gerald attended Marshall High School, where he graduated in 1964.He served his country honorably in the United States Army, embodying the dedication and bravery that would come to characterize his approach to life. For 22 years, he contributed his talents to Dana Corp. until its closing, followed by another 22 years at Automatic Handling, where he dedicated himself to his work until retirement. His colleagues appreciated not just his skills, but also the kindness and humor he consistently brought to the workplace.

Outside of work, Gerald found solace in fishing, relished the thrill of golfing, and filled his days with the sounds of music from legendary artists like ACDC, Pink Floyd, and the timeless melodies of Motown while enjoying his cigars. Saturdays and Sundays were often marked by warmth and rhythm, as he would clean his home to the soulful tunes.

Gerald was also an avid gardener, nurturing plants with the same love he gave to his family. He delighted in the simple pleasure of building boat and ship models, a hobby that connected him to both his creativity and his penchant for craftsmanship. A cherished tradition for Gerald was the family trips to Nettle Lake in Ohio, a gathering space that held fond memories since 1980, where laughter and love flourished.

At the heart of Gerald's world were his love for his children and grandchildren. He took great pride in their accomplishments and was always there to share in their joy. The door was always open at their house; he didn’t just raise 6 kids, but some of their friends as well! Gerald had a special bond with his dog Duke, who brought him companionship and comfort. Gerald’s playful spirit revealed itself in his enjoyment of KENO games and scratch-offs, as he embraced every opportunity for fun and excitement.

Perhaps the sweetest memories come from the simple pleasures, such as eating chocolate chip cookies and dancing around the living room with his wife, Pookie, whose support and love were truly the foundation of his happiness.

Gerald leaves behind a legacy filled with love, laughter, and countless cherished moments. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his spirit will continue to reside in the hearts of his family and friends, inspiring them to celebrate life as he did-with joy, passion, and a devotion to those they love.

Those left to forever cherish his memory are his loving children, Joyce (Donald), Laurie (Scott), Jerry (Jessi), Brad (Melinda) and Tammy (Charles); grandchildren, Brett, J.D., Jamie, Jazzmin, Albre, Chuckie, Joey, Orien, Bradley, Caleb, Hailey, Jackson, and Peter; and many great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Gerald was preceded in death by his wife of 38 years, Sharon Grimes, whom he married on June 5, 1976; son, John Sturdevant; grandson, Jeff; and brother, Robert Grimes.
