George Richard Webb

January 3, 1939 — October 1, 2021

George Richard "Dick" Webb, 82, of Toledo, Ohio, died on October 1st, 2021. He was a beloved father, husband, papa, mentor, and friend. Born in Chillicothe, Ohio, he graduated from Catholic Central High School, then went on to serve in the Army as a medic. He received his bachelor's degree from Ohio Northern University, then a graduate degree from Bowling Green State University, where he was in the first graduate school class of rehabilitation counselors.

Upon completing his education, he began a lifelong career of helping others. In the 70's he was an executive director of the Christoff House for Recovering Alcoholic Men. He then opened the Morley House for Recovering Alcoholic Women. The organization expanded into a full continuum of care for alcoholics and drug addicts and changed its name to comprehensive Addiction Services System (COMPASS). Under his leadership, it became a leading organization for addiction recovery care in the state of Ohio, serving over 10 counties and changing countless lives for the better. He retired from COMPASS in 1999 after 28 years of loyal service.

Dick's many years in addiction and recovery services left a mark on countless people, not only the ones who benefited from the services of the organizations, but also the many professionals who got their jump start under the tutelage of Dick Webb and COMPASS. His passion and hard work helped shape the public service system in Lucas County, Ohio.

He took pride in the many organizations he initiated and the local boards he served on, including the Lucas County Criminal Justice Coordinating Council, the Mental Health Insurance Trust, and the Behavioral Health Alliance Board. In 2014, he was inducted into The Lucas County Mental Health and Recovery Services Advocate Hall of Fame.

He was kind, generous, and a vibrant man who loved everyone around him. With his wicked sense of humor and quick witted remarks, he always knew how to make people laugh. He was generous with his time and love for others, always willing to listen and give advice, whether family, friend, or stranger. Throughout his career, Dick would walk around downtown Toledo greeting many homeless men by name and passing out a dollar or a sandwich for the most unique story of the day. That's who he was: he never met someone who stayed a stranger for long.

While Dick's career was important to him, the true pride of his life was his family. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, from watching football games to teaching them how to shoot guns. He had a love for cooking, art, and literature, and he was an avid outdoorsman who loved to build things, including the cabin in Chillicothe that he deeply cherished working on with his grandsons. He was a one-of-a-kind man and will be missed dearly by everyone who knew him.

Dick was preceded in death by the love of his life, Patsy Skaggs Webb, in 2013. He was also preceded in death by his mother and father, Mary and David Webb; brothers, David K. Webb and John "Printer" Webb; sister, Emily Nugent, and mother and father-in-law, Emma and Manny Skaggs. Dick is survived by his loving daughter, Jennifer Webb Naylor and her husband Tom; and his three grandsons, who were his pride and joy, Drew Howard, Ethan Howard, and Owen Naylor. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters; Charles Webb, Tim (Jan) Webb, Rebecca Mitovich, and Mary Alice Kenny; and sisters-in-law, Carol Richmond, Ella (Bill) Pfeiffer, and many nieces and nephews who loved their Uncle Dick.

A mass will be held in his honor at 11:00 am on Monday October 11th, at Gesu Catholic Church, 2049 Parkside Blvd, Toledo, OH, 43607.
