George Arthur Von Seggern, age 79 of Maumee, OH passed away on November 12 2024, holding hands with the love of his life, Sandra Von Seggern. He was born on June 16, 1945 to Annie and Arthur Von Seggern. Following graduation from Springfield High School, he went on to the United States Air Force (1963-1967) where he was K-9 handler. He was a proud veteran with a love for country and stories of his time in the service that have been passed on for generations in the family.
Following his time in the USAF, he graduated from Findlay College after many years at AP parts where he was active with the UAW, he retired. It was upon retirement from the job that paid the bills all those years that he was finally able to go after his dream job where he was a supervisor of rides, driving the train at the Toledo Zoo for 17 years. There he made many friends who would go on to feel like family. Driving the train kept him young and he loved making the ride a favorite part of the zoo trip for children and adults alike.
His different careers are not the only place that he left his mark. Being a Boy Scout leader to being a softball coach or playing softball as an adult, He was able to create memories like building Pinewood Derby cars, pitching in an old man's softball league to sitting far enough out in the outfield as a spectator that he couldn't get in trouble for swearing,, or criticizing umpires. George always had the corniest of jokes to share and would do anything to put a smile on the faces of those around him.
He is preceded in death by his parents Annie and Arthur Von Seggern, sister Charlotte, brother Albert (Bud) and grand daughter, Ashlynn and numerous amazing friends who will welcome him on this next journey. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Sandra, his brother Donald (Linda) and children James, Gary, Greg, Geoff, Christine (Daniel), Ronald, Eric as well as 17 grandchildren and seven great grandkids with an eighth joining us Earth side soon. He will be missed and remembered by numerous nieces and nephews, some of which look to him as a father figure. Sandra’s niece Charity and George had a special bond , he was so proud of her and to be her “uncle”. He also had many fond memories with Jennifer Smith. Wherever he went, he left his impact and for that we will be forever and eternally grateful.
Family and friends will be received at Newcomer Funeral Home, (Southwest Chapel) 4752 Heatherdowns Blvd. on Saturday, November 23, 2024 from 12:00pm-2:00pm. Services will immediately follow at 2:00pm. The service will be livestreamed and the link can be found on his obituary page at NewcomerToledo.com
George's wish was that everyone join the celebration of his life wearing their favorite Detroit Sports shirt or even Zoo shirt vs dark and somber clothing. If you choose to wear a Cleveland Indians shirt, or any others you will of course still be welcomed but prepare for some side eye on his behalf.
The family would like to thank the staff at Hospice of Northwest Ohio and his aids, Brandy, Bobbie, Sue, Renee and Jackie for the exceptional care George received in his last days.
