George R. Shively, age 87, of Toledo, passed away Friday, January 22nd, 2010 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Toledo. He was born September 29th, 1922 to George Arthur and Edna Frances (Epperson) Shively in Queen City, Missouri. George attended Lancaster High School graduating in 1941 with perfect attendance for all 4 years. He joined the military in 1942 and served as a paratrooper with the Marines during WWII. George was called to duty again in 1949 and served in Korea and was a survivor of Iwo Jima. He remained in the military as a reservist until 1961. George was devoted to his country, his God and especially to his family and he was proud to have been a Marine serving his country. He was a former member of the VFW Post 606. George was also an amateur radio operator "K8RYV". He spent many hours and years relaying calls from U.S. soldiers overseas and contacting their families locally to pass on information as to their well-being. One of his last calls was from a soldier serving in Desert Storm. George became a member of the IBEW when he was hired at Toledo Edison first as a linesman, then a foreman and finally as a trouble dispatcher, retiring in 1984 after 38 years. After retirement he always looked forward to meeting with his fellow retirees from Toledo Edison. George was a loving husband, father and grandfather and cherished the times spent with family and friends. He will also be remembered by all who knew him for his love of Opera music.
In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his sister, Neva Summerville; brother, Merlin "Bud" Shively; grandson, Eric Shively; daughter-in-law, Darlene Hughes and step-granddaughter, Debbie. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Helen M. (Linger) Shively of Toledo; son, George Robert (Elizabeth) Shively of Toledo; stepson, Larry Hughes of Illinois; grandchildren; Cori Estelle; Rob Jr. (Kim) and granddaughter-in-law, Sybil; step grandchildren, Rick; Tina and Kevin; great-grandchildren, David John and Skylar Georgeanne; step great grandchildren, Larry; Samantha; Cody and Kayla; siblings, Deloris Carpenter of Lancaster, MO and Mary Louise Jackson of Ottumwa, IA; Rexford (Faye) Shively of Ottumwa, IA and Max (Neva) Shively of Lancaster, MO.
The family will receive guests Monday from 10:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4150 W. Laskey Rd. (419-473-0300) followed by Funeral Services beginning at 1:00 p.m. Officiating will be Rev. Matthew Cook. Entombment will follow at Toledo Memorial Park.
