Our dad, Frank Carl Herzog, Sr., was called home by our Lord on Saturday morning, November 23, 2013. Dad fit the description of what a person of "The Greatest Generation" looked like and lived like. He was a devoted husband of sixty-three years to our mom, Evelyn Claire (Farbrother) Herzog and spent the last three years as her primary caregiver, reminding us that when they said vows to each other sixty-three years ago, for better for worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health, they meant them.
He was extremely proud of his time serving in the Army during World War ll. Like many of that generation he never asked to be noticed, he simply felt it was his duty to serve our country. He worked hard as a truck driver for Lathrop Construction Co. for thirty-four years and retired to a life of fishing, hunting, and grandkids.
He loved the outdoors, whether it was walleye fishing on Lake Erie or walking around some pond fishing for bass. He enjoyed taking his kids and grandkids fishing, sharing what he loved to do with those he loved.
Whether he was deer hunting with his bow or small game hunting, he enjoyed being outside and the thrill of the hunt. At one point when cataracts were causing him trouble he taught himself to shoot the bow left handed so that he could keep hunting.
His children knew he loved them, and we all marveled at how amazing he was with his grandchildren and the small children he and mom babysat. To say the least we were in awe and envious of how he related to his grandkids and great grandkids. One of his greatest gifts to us was with a phone call or a knock on the door he would drop everything to help us out. Never asking for anything in return he would just say, "This is what a dad does." Thanks Dad...Grandpa...Uncle Frank. Thanks.
In addition to his wife, Evelyn, Frank is survived by his children, William (Barb) Herzog, Diane (Mark) Stark, Frank Herzog Jr., Karen (Dave) Chumchal; grandchildren, Corey, Stacy, Vickie, Alex, Ethan, Kyle and Anna; 7 great grandchildren; brothers, Nick (Pat), William (MaryEllen) II, August "Dutch" (Barb), Louis Sr. and Pete (Lydia) Herzog; brother-in-law, Kenneth Cook Sr. and sister-in-law, Jean Sites.
