Evelyn J. Johnston, age 72, of Toledo, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, Saturday, October 10th, 2009 at Flower Hospital after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. She was born May 18th, 1937 to Clarence and Josephine (Szyskowski) May in Toledo, Ohio. Evelyn earned her Bachelors Degree in Business Administration and then her Masters in English, both from the University of Toledo, where she was an English Instructor for many years. During college Evelyn was a member of Chi Omega Social Sorority and Beta Gamma Sigma National Honor Society for Business Administration. She and her husband, Dick enjoyed boating and are members of Bay View Yacht Club and Put-in-Bay Yacht Club, enjoying many summers on their boat at Put-in-Bay. Evelyn also liked working crossword puzzles and reading the classics as well as, modern conservative political publications. As an English Instructor, Evelyn had a talent for punctuating and often found humor in errors in public advertising materials. Most importantly, Evelyn was a loving and devoted wife and mother, proud of her sons accomplishments and grandmother, treasuring the time she was able to spend with her grandchildren, who were her pride and joy and her family, for whom she loved to prepare festive gatherings. Evelyn was a friend to many, enjoying times with those at the boat clubs. She will be truly missed by all who knew her.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her loving husband of 47 years, Richard "Dick" Johnston; sons, Matthew (Kelly) Johnston of Traverse City, MI and Joel (Joy) Johnston of Kingwood, TX; grandchildren, Claire; Jeremiah; Ryan; Josie and Kyle; brother-in-law, John "Ed" (Beverly) Johnston; brother, Marvin (Ella) May and many dear and special friends.
The family will receive guests Tuesday from 2-8:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4150 W. Laskey Rd. (419-473-0300). Funeral Services will begin Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home. Officiating will be Pastor David Claasson. Interment will follow at Toledo Memorial Park.
