Evelyn Ruth Chapman, 97, passed away in her home on August 23 surrounded by her loving family.
Evelyn was born January 28, 1927 to Perry and Myrtle (Harris) Robbins in Toledo, Ohio. She graduated from DeVilbiss High School in 1945 and worked as a secretary for Owens Corning.
A blind date set up by her next door neighbor sparked the greatest love of her life with Frank Chapman. Evelyn and Frank were married for 73 years, had two children, four grandchildren, and a great granddaughter. She was excited for the arrival of a second great grandchild in October of this year.
Evelyn was the cornerstone of the family, being a homemaker, loving wife, nurturing mother, spoiling grandmother, tender great grandmother, and a wonderful friend to all. Walking groups at Wildwood and Franklin Park Mall kept Evelyn active and engaged in those friendships for many years. She gave back to her community by delivering food and companionship with Mobile Meals of Toledo. Evelyn also enjoyed traveling with cherished trips to Cuba, Hawaii, Alaskan cruises, and multiple Naval reunions.
Outside of her family, Evelyn’s next love was the sun. Evelyn could be found most hot summer days at Laurel Hill Swim and Tennis Club soaking in the rays with her grandchildren in tow. A single piece of dark chocolate and cup of black coffee, just a few degrees shy of boiling, were a daily afternoon treat.
Evelyn is survived by daughter, Jane Szumigala; son, David (Dolly) Chapman; grandchildren, Alison (Alexa Fulmer) Oprea, Greg (Katie) Szumigala, Lauren (Robbie Gantt) Chapman, and Mark Chapman; great granddaughter, Hannah Oprea; sister, Carol Bunge; and sister-in-law, Joan Robbins.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Chapman; brother, Robert Robbins; sister and brother-in-law, Eunice (Robbins) and Floyd Schaffner; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ted and Willie (Pickle) Chapman; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Martha (Chapman) and Ernie Semetko; brother-in-law, Robert Bunge; son-in-law, Frank Szumigala, and many beloved friends.
The loving help from the caregivers of Comfort Keepers and Heartland Hospice over the past several years let Evelyn live with grace and dignity.
