Eugene Smedlund, Sr.

Eugene M. "Gene" Smedlund, Sr., age 76 of Toledo, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Tuesday, May 8, 2012. He was born February 28, 1936 to Ernest and Esther (Mattson) Smedlund in Stambaugh, Michigan. Gene co-owned Firestone in Monroe, Michigan for 15 years. After retirement he worked for Promedica where he delivered home IV care to patients and enjoyed the camaraderie he shared with them. In his spare time he enjoyed gambling, which earned him the name, "Gambling Gramps." Gene had a wonderful sense of humor and never met a stranger.

His family will remember him as loving husband, father, grandfather and will dearly miss his warm smile.

Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 58 years, Beatrice Smedlund; children, Eugene (Wava) Smedlund, Jr., Steven (Chrysa) Smedlund, Cynthia (Dave) Jascob and Linda (Marty) McKelvey; grandchildren, Angela, Amber, Nikki, Sean, Eugene III, Kathryn, Sara, Gina, Stevie, Stephanie, Becki, Andrew and Lexie; great-grandchildren, Darren, Trenton, Evelyn, Hayden, Mya, Emma and Maria.

The family will receive guests on Thursday from 2:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4150 W. Laskey Rd. (419-473-0300). Funeral Services will begin in the funeral home on Friday at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow in Toledo Memorial Park.
