Ernest Carl Bollinger, age 93, of Maumee, Ohio passed away March 18, 2017 at his home. He was born August 23, 1923 in Toledo, Ohio to Edward and Clara (Carnes) Bollinger. Ernie grew up in Toledo and worked for Jeep for more than forty years, retiring in 1981. He served in the US Navy in the South Pacific during WWII. After surviving the explosion of the USS Mount Hood, he reenlisted in the reserves and, in April 2014, was a participant of the Northwest Ohio Honor Flight.
He was a devoted husband to Marjorie L. (Shepherd) Bollinger for almost sixty years as well as a loving father to his four children. In addition to his wife, Ernie is survived by his daughters, Clara (Nathan) Chambers and Maureen (Kenneth) Baron; daughter-in-law, Mary Bollinger; grandchildren, Lisa Bollinger, Leslie Chambers, Kristen (Steve Bigelow) Chambers, Briana (Adam) Pifer, Erica Chambers, Brittany Baron; great-granddaughter, Addison Bollinger. In addition to his parents, Ernie was preceded in death by his daughter, Kandy (Cockie) Mills, son, Ernest "Bill" Bollinger; and siblings, John, Thelma May, Leonard, Valaen Dague, Eddean, Lester, Paul, Ada Tilford, Raymond, George, Donald, Eloise Carter, Kenneth, Delmar, and Winifred Yarrito. He cherished his relationships with the staffs of the W. W. Knight Center, the Maumee Senior Center, and TARTA Call-A-Ride as well as his friends at both Central and Calvary United Methodist churches.
The viewing will be Saturday, March 25, 2017 from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4752 Heatherdowns Blvd. Services will begin Saturday at 1:00 pm. Burial will follow at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Walter Weller Post, the Maumee Senior Center, The University Church Community Garden, or the Monroe Street Neighborhood Center.
