Eloise Leathers, age 69, of Swanton, passed away Tuesday, January 30, 2007 in St. Luke's Hospital. She was born May 29, 1937 to John and Flora (Danner) Appling in Toledo. Eloise grew up in East Toledo. Born into a "yours, mine and ours" family, Eloise's mother had nine children from her first marriage to Kenneth Rawlings, Sr. Her father John had eight children from his first marriage to Addie Young. Together John and Flora had four more children of which Eloise was the oldest, being number 18 of 21. The family was given a piano in the early 1940's. Eloise was always playing it and was able to take lessons after she was in an accident and received a Trust Fund that had been established for her to take those lessons.
Eloise leaves to cherish her memory, sons: Jimmy, Nate (Laurie), John, Joe (Patricia) and Charlie (Angie) Leathers; daughters: Janet (Bill) Rau, Karen Leathers (Jackie Lafferty) and Irene (John) Coutcher; grandchildren: Jenny (Sean), Joe (Jennifer), Michael (Jillian), Amy (Jeff), Amanda, Jimmy Jr., Thomas, Jason, Jennifer, Mitchell, Jeremy (Heather), April (Matt), Theresa (Matt), Jamie, Tanya (Billy), Tabitha, Joni (Ben), Rain, Shane, Joe, Stacie, Angela, Chaz, Dylan, Cain, Stephanie, Ronnie and Robert; great-grandchildren: Dillan, Tony, Elena, Tessa, Nicole, Lydia, Emma, Devon, Aston, Chance, Wyatt, Alissa, Owen, Nicole and Daniel; sisters: Clarann Boczan, Kathy Glass and Ruth Farnsworth; brothers: George Appling, Clifton (Dolly) Appling and John, Tom and Bob Rawlings; in-laws: Mildred Saunders, Donald (Janine) Leathers, Sr., and Bonnie (Paul) Warniment; and many treasured nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by husband, Jimmy T. Leathers, Sr., 2001, grandson, Christopher Lee Leathers, sisters, Arline Schmidt, Jean Osenbaugh, Helen Maxcy, Alma Tracey, Dorothy Hite and Mary Rawlings, brothers, Kenneth, Jim, Rich Rawlings, Earl, John and Don Appling.
Eloise worked for 17 years as an Administrative Assistant at O.I. Corporate Headquarters in downtown Toledo. One of her favorite things to do was have her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren visit her at lunchtime. She would give them a tour of the upper floors to her office and then take them to lunch downstairs. To us she's not someone's employee, or fellow worshiper, "she's our Elly". Eloise was also a loyal member of the Worldwide Church of God, and Grace Family Fellowship. She had many close friends during her years of worship.
Regretfully, she now joins our late father Jimmy T. Leathers. Together their very existence created this legacy of our family. May they both rest in peace and cherish each other for eternity, your loving family.
The family will receive guests Sunday from 2-8 p.m. at the Newcomer Funeral Home, 4150 W. Laskey Rd. (419-473-0300). Funeral Services will be Monday at 10 a.m. Officiating will be Pastor Larry Brown. Interment will follow in Springfield Township Cemetery.
The family would like to give a special thanks to the staff of Harborside of Swanton for the loving care and support they gave during this difficult time, as well as the family, friends, and church friends for helping Eloise anytime there was a need and for just being there for her.
