Elizabeth E. Gess

Elizabeth E. "Liz" Gess, age 95, of Toledo, passed away on Friday, September 6, 2013 at Ridgewood Manor. She was born on January 22, 1918 to John and Elizabeth (Kopes) Mesteller. Liz was a longtime member of Hope Lutheran Church, where she was active in many church functions. She always worked the church's annual "Super Sale." When she was able, she enjoyed taking many trips with her daughter and son in law to Hilton Head, South Carolina. In her spare time, she was an avid reader; sometimes she would be reading multiple books at the same time. Liz was an excellent seamstress, which her family grew to appreciate this talent that she had.

Liz and her late husband, Walter enjoyed many years at Devils Lake at their summer cottage. She worked as the Secretary to the Board for the Scholarship Funds Inc. though the University of Toledo. Liz was also a legal secretary for a number of years.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Polly (Jim) Malohn of Toledo and Richard (Rhonda Wilcox) Gess of Decatur, GA; daughter in law, Sarah Secor of Perrysburg; grandchildren, David (Lisa) Malohn, Matthew (Jen) Malohn, Jefferson Gess, Emma Gess and George Gess; great-grandchildren, Will Malohn and Cate Malohn. In addition to her parents Liz was preceded in death by her husband, Walter; son, Thomas; siblings, John Mesteller, Grace Kovacs and Helen Gyori.

The family will receive guests on Thursday, September 12, 2013 from 2-8:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4752 Heatherdowns Blvd. (419-381-1900). Funeral Services will begin on Friday, September 13, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at Hope Lutheran Church, 2201 Secor Rd., Toledo, OH 43606. Entombment will follow in Ottawa Hills Memorial Park.
