Elder Robert P. "Bob" Sherman, age 73, of Toledo, passed away peacefully Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born on January 26, 1938 to Rusher and Luzenia Sherman in Wilmington, North Carolina. Bob was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving his country proudly during the Korean Conflict. He was a teacher for over 30 years until retiring, often affectionately referring to his students as "Hamm". Elder Bob was the Senior Pastor at Corinth Apostolic Church of God for over 10 years. He was also the 1st black owner and operator of a welding, fabricating and security company; Bob Sherman Armour Guard of Ohio, Inc. Bob was very artsy and loved to preach the word of God. He loved nothing more than spending time with his family and friends. Bob was a devoted, wonderful husband, father, granddad, great-granddad, brother, uncle and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Robert J. Sherman. Bob is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Mamie (Scoggins) Sherman; children, Eve (Peter) Rocker, Reginald Sherman, Rolland Sherman, Christopher Sherman, Timothy Sherman, Mamie (Darrick) Sherman-Smith and Dana Sherman; 21 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; brother, Elder James (Ella) Sherman; sisters, Gladys Mitchell and Olivett (Raymond) Mapson; sister-in-law, Jean Jones; and a host of nieces, nephews and dear friends.
The family will receive guests on Friday from 2 – 5:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4150 W. Laskey Rd., Toledo (419-473-0300) with Funeral Services beginning at 5:00 p.m. in the funeral home.
