Elbert L. "Coach" Burgess, Sr., age 88, passed away peacefully on April 10, 2016. He was born on May 12, 1927 to the late Nora and Lee Burgess in Toledo, Ohio.
Elbert retired from Jeep after 44 years in the Press Dept. He was a proud WWII Veteran of the U.S. Army. Elbert coached the Pickett Tigers for over 25 years. He later volunteered in the TPS System. Elbert had a passion for jazz music. He was a devoted husband, dad and grandpa.
Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 71 years, Alberta; children, Sylvia L. Cooper, James W. Burgess and Sterling S. (Kay) Burgess; daughter-in-law, Donna Burgess; sister, Awana Westbrook; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; 4 sisters; 3 brothers; children, Vickie, Elbert Jr., Edward and Deborah; son-in-law, Clinton Cooper.
The family will receive guests on Friday, April 15, 2016 from 4-8:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4752 Heatherdowns Blvd., Toledo (419-381-1900). The Funeral Service will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. Friends and family may visit on Saturday from 10-11:00 a.m. prior to the service. Burial will take place at the Historic Woodlawn Cemetery.
