Edward C. Rohr-husband, father, engineer, inventor and always curious tinkerer-died peacefully on the morning of April 4, 2024.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Mary Ann (Weigelt) Rohr. He also leaves behind his children, David of Canandaigua, New York, Paul of Whitehouse and Anne (Bill Lewis) of Douglasville, Georgia, along with his sister, Kathleen Haubert, of Fremont, brother Tom (Diane), of Ashland and brother-in-law Tom (Cindy Dulude) Weigelt of Las Vegas, Nevada. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and dozens of nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents and several siblings, Betty Jo, Frank and Jean, and his youngest son, Peter.
Ed was born in the middle of a heavy snowstorm on March 1, 1931, in Fremont, Ohio,
the son of Helen Welker Rohr and Melville Joseph "Joe" Rohr. A proud "Buckeye," He was a 1955 graduate of The Ohio State University where he majored in industrial engineering. And he made good use of that degree, holding engineering positions with Sylvania Electric in Ottawa, American Standard in Tiffin and Johns-Manville Fiberglass in Waterville.
He had tremendous enthusiasm for his work which involved countless projects that engaged his creativity and problem-solving skills. His time at Johns-Manville included a period where he worked directly with NASA during the peak years of the space program. Most of Ed's brothers and brothers-in-law also became successful engineers which significantly enlivened family conversations during the 1960s and 70s. In retirement, he invented an innovative product called the Balloon Buoy pump, which made it easy and efficient for clowns and other entertainers to quickly inflate "twisting" balloons. The pump was sold worldwide.
Just after graduation from Ohio State and marriage to Mary Ann, Ed served in in South Korea as part of the United States Army's famed "Big Red One" (1st Infantry Division). For more than 50 years, he and Mary Ann lived in Ottawa Hills where they accumulated numerous friends as their children grew, graduated and started to bring home grandchildren. As a younger man, Ed loved fishing adventures with his father and brothers and then with his children. Not particularly athletic by his own admission, he developed a surprising aptitude for skiing which he pursued ardently in the 1970s and 80s. He also enjoyed numerous family vacations in the various station wagons he owned, the most memorable being a three and a half week adventure around the country in 1974. During the 1980s and 90s, he and Mary Ann took in most of the European continent, often accompanied by daughter, Anne.
For many years, he was a parishioner of Gesu Catholic Church but more recently had attended St. Pius Church.
Family and friends may gather at Calvary Cemetery, 2224 Dorr St, Toledo, OH 43607, on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, from 11:30 am until the time of services at Noon. Following services, Edward will be laid to rest.
