Edward "Ed" Wechtel

Edward "Ed" Wechtel, a pillar of the Toledo community and a man of remarkable integrity and dedication, passed away on September 17, 2024, in Toledo, Ohio, at the age of 95. Born on May 30, 1929, in Maumee, Ohio, Ed's life was marked by an unwavering commitment to public service and a profound love for his family and community.

Ed graduated from Maumee High School before pursuing higher education at Bowling Green State University for two years. His sense of duty soon drew him to serve in the 148th Infantry Regiment of the Ohio National Guard during the Korean War, a testament to his patriotism and resilience.

In a beautiful chapter of his life, Ed married Patricia Ruth Hunter of Perrysburg, together embarking on a journey filled with love and purpose. He proudly welcomed his son, Edward H. Wechtel, in 1953, who would carry forth the values instilled in him by his father. Ed cherished his role as a father and took immense pride in his family, which later expanded to include his granddaughter, Laura Hylton, and two great-grandsons, Tanner and Hunter Hylton.

Ed's professional journey began in 1956 when he became a police officer in his hometown of Maumee. Through dedication and hard work, he rose to the esteemed ranks of Lieutenant and Assistant Chief, before culminating in his distinguished role as Chief of Police of Ottawa Hills, where he served diligently for 16 years. Retiring from law enforcement, Ed transitioned into a new phase of service as an administrator at St. Charles Hospital, contributing to the well-being of countless individuals in the community.

In 1986, Ed and Patricia relocated to South Carolina, where they enjoyed the warmth and serenity of the southern landscape. However, their love for Ohio called them back, and in 1998, they returned to Northwestern Ohio, bringing with them a wealth of experience and cherished memories.

Beyond his professional endeavors, Ed's life was rich with diverse passions and hobbies. He found joy in woodworking and devoted his time to horse riding for organizations supporting handicapped children. Music also played a significant role in his life, as he was an enthusiastic member of Barbershop Quartet and Chorus singing, sharing his love for harmonies and melodies with those around him.

Throughout his time at Ohio Living Swan Creek retirement community, Ed exemplified leadership and compassion, actively engaging in various resident initiatives. He called bingo, served as past president of the residents' organization, and managed the delivery of newspapers, ensuring the community thrived in camaraderie and connection. His involvement extended to numerous committees, signifying a life lived for others.

A lifetime member of the American Legion, Ed served with honor as a past commander of the Maumee Legion Post, embodying the spirit of service that characterized his life.

Ed Wechtel leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and music, as well as the cherished memories held dearly by his son, grandson-in-law Tim, granddaughter, and great-grandsons. His unwavering dedication to his family and community will forever resonate within the hearts of those who knew him.

A memorial gathering to honor his remarkable life will take place on September 28, 2024, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Ohio Living Swan Creek, located at 5916 Cresthaven Lane, Toledo, Ohio. Friends, family, and all whose lives were touched by Ed are invited to come together in celebration of a life well-lived.
