Edward R. Darmofal, 86, of west Toledo passed away on August 21, 2024. He was born June 20, 1938 to his parents Vincent and Nellie Darmofal. Ed was the sixth of eight children. He was a 1956 Graduate of Macomber High School (Printing). He was a self-employed printer for most of his life, retiring in 2011 from Dar/Creative Printing Service. Because of his hard work and dedication in providing for his family, Ed instilled an amazing work ethic for his children of which they helped out in the family business. He proved that when you put forth your best, you have a sense of fulfillment, self-worth and can do anything you put your mind to.
Ed met the love of his life, Rosalie in 1959. Ed and Rosalie were married for 61 years. They enjoyed celebrating in all the joys of their children and grandchildren. He was a devoted husband and father. They had 4 children and enjoyed many years traveling and trailer camping across the United States. Ed shared his love of fishing and gardening with his family. While the kids were growing up, he coached basketball and softball teams for many years.
Ed served in the US Army from 1956 to 1958. While on active duty, Ed was given the opportunity to go to prep school for the USMA at West Point although he did not accept. He served in the Ohio Army National Guard with the 148th Infantry in Fremont and Napoleon, Ohio as well as the 137th and 37th MP Company in Toledo. He was commissioned after attending the Ohio National Guard, OCS. He was honorably discharged in 1968 as a 1st Lieutenant with a total of 12 years. He has a private pilot license and was an accomplished pilot. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 3122.
Ed was an avid Ohio State Football Fan where he could be found watching the game and phoning family members to discuss the ups and downs of the game. He also enjoyed playing Texas Hold Em’ with family members during the holidays. In addition, he had a love for sprint car racing and sponsored a car that his brother Joe co-owned. They had many good times going to races for several years. He was known as “Uncle Ed” and “Lieutenant" to many people he met even though they were not related.
He is survived by his loving wife, Rosalie; his four children, Kevin (Julie) Darmofal, Loren (Mila) Darmofal, Alan Darmofal, Michele (Andrew) Palmer; sister Stella Gerl; brothers, Robert (Susan) and Joseph (Fran) Darmofal; grandchildren, Logan Darmofal, Gavin Palmer, Alex Louthan and Lyndsey Ahleman; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Raymond (Judy) and Leo (Emma Lou); sisters, Eleanore, Terry Townsend (George); brothers-in-law George Townsend and David Gerl as well as his daughter-in-law Christy.
The family will receive guests on Friday, August 30, 2024 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Newcomer Funeral Home at 3655 King Rd., Toledo, OH 43617 with a Prayer Service beginning at 6:30 p.m.
A Catholic funeral mass will be held on Saturday, August 31, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Clement Church, 3030 Tremainsville Road, Toledo, Ohio with visiting beginning at 10:00 a.m.
Ed will be laid to rest at Toledo Memorial Park Cemetery.
