Edith Jean Beard

Edith Jean Beard, age 83, of Toledo, passed away Tuesday, July 22, 2008 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Perrysburg. One of five children, Eadie was born July 5, 1925 in Findlay, Ohio to Henry Ward and Eutimia (Jiminez) Beard. The family moved to Waterville, Ohio not long after. It was there that Eadie made and kept close ties with classmates from Waterville High School as well as holding current memberships in the Waterville Historical Society and the American Legion Auxiliary, Waterville Unit #0463. Eadie was previously married to Robert H. Lawhorn and Edward E. Cashman, with whom she ran The Press Club of Toledo until 1960, rubbing elbows with both the famous and infamous. Subsequently, Eadie was employed in retail, retiring from Macy's, where she was the Manager of the Little Shop and Fur Departments. Eadie kept busy in retirement, volunteering with RSVP and Wildwood Metropark. She was especially proud of her work on the citizens committee Look Up, Toledo, which helped plan the Veterans' Glass City Skyway bridge over the Maumee River. She took many trips, from Mexico to Canada, Nova Scotia to Vancouver and points between. She was also an avid reader and loved spending time with her great-grandsons. Most Saturdays were spent enjoying "Sister's Day" with her sister Fran. "Sister's Day" included going to festivals, art shows, antiquing or just wandering and having lunch, but they always ended the day with a lively game of cards. Eadie's fried chicken was legendary. She had possibly the world's largest collection of Cool Whip containers and empty jars.

Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Kaye J. and Ronald T. Welty, Sr; grandsons, Ronald T., Jr. (Lori) and Christopher T. Welty; great-grandsons, Jackson T. and Tucker R. Welty; brothers, John "Jack" Beard and Henry "Barney" Garza; sisters, Frances Tassie and Marianne Beard; cousin, Madge L. Beard; and many nieces and nephews. Eadie was preceded in death by her longtime companion, Leo T. McHue and her sister, Charlotte Eutimia (Temy) Brown.

Friends and family are invited to join in a celebration of Eadie's life Saturday, August 2, 2008 at the Chapel in Ottawa Hills Memorial Park (please meet at 10:55 a.m. at the cemetery's main entrance on Central Ave). Please bring your memories of Eadie to share.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to Sami's Wish List, a non-profit foundation that benefits families of extremely ill children, c/o Toledo Children's Hospital, 2142 North Cove Blvd, Toledo, OH 43606, or to the charity of the Donor's Choice.

Cremation was entrusted to Newcomer Funeral Home, (419-473-0300).
