Douglas J. Smith, age 71, of Toledo, passed away suddenly Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at home. He was born on June 4, 1942 to Charles and Joan (Calkins) Smith in Toledo. Doug was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force serving his country proudly, known as the fastest one finger typist. He was employed with Roadway Express for 30 years before retiring. Doug was a member of the Teamsters Local 20. He enjoyed bowling, bike riding, astronomy and airplanes. Doug loved taking his children and grandchildren for plane rides across the city. He had a great sense of humor and loved nothing more than spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Doug is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Kathleen Smith; children, Dawn (Michael), Jay (Rebecca), Jim (Kim) and Doug (Jocelyn) Smith; grandchildren, Joshua, Nicholas (Mickey), Alek, Abram, Addison, Ayden, Samantha, Brandon, Madison, Isabella, Dorian and Maisy; great-grandson and best buddy, Connor; son-in-law and caregiver, Tom Dye; brothers, Wayne (Lori) and Craig (Debbie) Smith; sister, Joni Bockmiller; and many other family members and dear friends.

The family will receive guests on Monday from 4 – 7:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4150 W. Laskey Rd., Toledo (419-473-0300).
