Douglas Alvin Grau, age 78, of Toledo, passed away peacefully Sunday, May 1, 2022 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio Toledo. He was born October 20, 1943 in Toledo to Alvin and Chloris (Bigley) Grau. Doug graduated from Libbey High School, Class of 1961. Shortly after graduation, he entered the U.S. Army, serving his country proudly from 1963-1965. Upon his honorable discharge from the military, Doug returned home and joined the American Legion in Lewiston, Michigan and later Conn-Weissenberger American Legion Post 587 in Toledo. He was employed with the Devilbiss Corporation for many years.
Doug was an avid outdoorsman and loved spending time at his cabin in the woods in Lewiston, Michigan. While there he enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting and mushrooming, after which he would demonstrate his culinary skills by preparing the "catch of the day".
He also loved sports of all kinds. In his younger years Doug enjoyed racing cars, playing softball and bowling with several leagues with his Dad and siblings from his teenage years through adulthood. Doug was a dedicated fan of the Detroit Tigers and the Lions, following their games for years.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his brothers, Richard and Frederick Grau and son-in-law, Joseph Cole. Doug is survived by his wife, Cheryl (Harvey) Grau; 5 children, Teri (John) Klinger, Laurie Cole, Rich (Susan) Grau, Angie (Tony) Hartzell and Beth Grau; 12 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; stepchildren, Lisa Wirick and Blake Mercer; 6 step-grandchildren; sister, Norma (Gene) Fahrer; brothers, Gerald (Sharon) Grau and John (Trish) Grau and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Doug will be remembered for his deep voice, his love of nature and many longtime friendships.
The family will receive guests Thursday, May 12, 2022, from 6:00 - 8:00 pm at Newcomer, NW Chapel, 4150 W. Laskey Rd. (419-473-0300). A Graveside Service will be Friday at 1:00 pm. Marble Park Cemetery, Milan, Michigan.
