Dorothy J. Gay took the hand of God and walked into His peace on Friday, July 15, 2011 at the age of 88. She was born April 8, 1923 to Harry and Maude (Kean) Robinson in Canton, Ohio. Dorothy was a 1941 graduate of Timken Vocational High School. She married Paul C. Gay on February 8, 1946 in Canton and he preceded her in death in December 2005. Over the years Dorothy worked for the Canton Repository Newspaper in the classified department, she sang in the Canton Opera Society as part of the chorus and worked at J.C. Penny's for many years. She taught at a mental hospital for the criminally insane in Enid, Oklahoma for 9 months and volunteered at the Riverside Hospital gift shop. Most importantly she was a preacher's wife, where she was involved in many community activities including Past President of the Galion Current News Club.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Chrislyn (Michael) Shelhart, Paula (William) Ater and Sheryl (Edwin) Overstreet; grandchildren, Eric (Rachelle) Shelhart, Aaron (Rebecca) Shelhart, Tonya (Barry) Poling and Tony Ater; 9 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great grandchildren; sister, Elizabeth Hard of Michigan; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. In addition to her husband and parents she was preceded in death by her sister, Katherine and brother, Kenneth.
The family will receive guests Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4150 W. Laskey Rd. (419-473-0300). Funeral Services will follow in the funeral home at 2:00 p.m.
