Donald Schaetzke

December 17, 1957 — June 21, 2023

Donald A. Schaetzke, 65, of Toledo, Ohio, passed away unexpectedly on June 21, 2023, at his home. Born on December 17, 1957, in Toledo, Ohio, he was the fourth child of Janet Audene (Williams) Schaetzke and the late James Schaetzke.

Don graduated from Bowsher High School in 1976, where he excelled in football and basketball. Upon graduation, he went to work as a stagehand for Local IATSE 24, building stages in theaters and entertainment venues for over 40 years.

Outside of work, he always kept busy with side jobs, helping friends with building projects for many years. A talented mechanic and carpenter, he was passionate about helping others rebuild old cars, motorcycles, decks, and garages, just to name a few. His favorite project was building his home, which he designed with his father, James, and where he also raised his children, Andrew and Emily.

His favorite role was being a father. After his former wife, Sheila (Crossen) Schaetzke, passed away in 2004, he stepped up to the plate, often working day and night to provide and support his children's upbringing. He learned, grew, and loved nothing more than being a part of their lives.

Most who knew Don know that he was "one-of-a-kind." He lived life fully and made an impact in his own way on all the people he knew. He was proud of what he accomplished in his life, his children, and his home, and would want it to be remembered as he lived it. The memory of Don will forever be cherished by those who knew and loved him. His presence brought light into the lives of many, and his memory will continue to inspire and guide us.

Don is survived by his son, Andrew (Rochelle); daughter, Emily; grandchildren Jett, Ellie, and Mary; mother, Audene "Mimi"; siblings, Daniel, David (Wendy), Deborah (Paul) Bucher; and numerous nieces and nephews. Don is preceded in death by his father, James, and former wife, Sheila.

The family will receive guests on Tuesday, June 27, 2023, from 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4752 Heatherdowns Blvd. (Across from the Stranahan Theatre). There will be a memorial service beginning at 6:00 pm at the funeral home. Burial will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to the donor's choice in Don's memory.
