Donald V. Metzger, a cherished husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on April 21, 2025, in Toledo, Ohio, at the age of 98. Born on October 3, 1926, in Toledo, Donald's life was emblematic of dedication and resilience. He spent many years as a journeyman tool and die maker, dedicating 21 years of his career to Toledo Scale before continuing to work at various companies until he fully retired a decade later.

A proud veteran, Donald joined the U.S. Navy after high school and served aboard the U.S.S. Renate in the South Pacific during World War II. He arrived in Japan shortly after the atomic bombings, an experience that undoubtedly shaped his perspective on life.

Throughout his lifetime, Donald showcased a vibrant personality that endeared him to many. Known for his humor, he had a relaxed nature and was never bound by strict schedules. He was a storyteller at heart, often beginning his tales with the phrase, "Now this is a true story, I'm not making this up," captivating listeners with his memories and experiences.

Donald had a passion for fishing and enjoyed collecting various items. He cherished the moments spent at his cottage in Hillsdale, Michigan on Cub Lake where he created lasting memories with his family and grandkids. His loving family held a special place in his heart, and he took great pride in sharing his life lessons and family stories with them.

In addition to his professional and personal achievements, Donald's journey was marked by profound love. He married Mary Anne Danko on November 3, 1951, and had four children together before her untimely passing in 1969. He later married Mary Ellen Lafountain in 1971, with whom he shared three children, and they remained steadfast partners until the end of his life.

Donald is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Mary Ellen Metzger; his daughters, Barbara Black and husband Tim, Mary Dantuma and husband Jeff, Ann Ball and husband Dan, and Carol Steele and husband Dale; his son, David Metzger and wife Andrea; thirteen grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a host of extended family members who will deeply miss him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Marguerite Metzger; his sisters, Doris Hearson and Lorna Jakubowski; his first wife, Mary Anne Metzger; and his two sons, Donald J and Donald J.

Donald V. Metzger leaves behind a legacy filled with love, laughter, and unforgettable stories. He made the best of his journey, was dearly loved, and will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.

Visitation will be held on April 29, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Newcomer Funeral Home, Northwest Toledo, located at 4150 W Laskey Rd, Toledo, OH 43623. A funeral service will take place on April 30, 2025, at 11:00 AM, followed by burial at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park at 12:15 PM. The burial will conclude at approximately 12:45 PM with military honors.
