Donald James Honas Sr., age 94, of Toledo, Ohio, passed away peacefully on February 12, 2025, at Otterbein Sunset Village. Donald was born December 4, 1930, in Luckey, Ohio, to the late Michael and Leah (Ebke) Honas.
His early education was marked by his attendance at Central Catholic High School. Donald began his career as a meat cutter at A&P Supermarket, where he honed his skills and built lasting relationships with his colleagues and customers. In pursuit of new opportunities, he relocated to Fort Myers, Florida, where he continued to share his engaging spirit while working at Winn-Dixie during his retirement years.
Beyond his professional achievements, Donald's passion for baseball was a defining aspect of his life. He was a devoted fan of the Detroit Tigers, often found closely following their games and passionately supporting the team. His love for the sport extended to coaching baseball at Hiawatha Elementary School, where he inspired young athletes and fostered a sense of teamwork and dedication. His commitment to baseball was further exemplified through his roles as past commissioner and president of the Trilby Baseball Association in Toledo before his move to Florida in 1979. During his time in Florida, he loved attending spring training games, continuing to fuel his passion for the sport.
Donald will be remembered for his warmth, dedication, and the impact he had on those around him. His legacy lives on in the hearts of all who knew him and he will be deeply missed.
