Donald J. Gates

Donald Joseph Gates, age 67, of Toledo, Ohio, passed away August 31, 2024 at Divine Rehabilitation and Nursing at Sylvania. Donald was born July 17, 1957, in Toledo, Ohio, to the late Donald and Jane (Arnold) Gates.

Donald attended Woodward High School and went straight into the military. Donald honorably served in the Army, a testament to his character and dedication to his country. His military service shaped his values and forged friendships that would last a lifetime. Donald embarked on a career with Toledo Flooring and one that would serve the railroad for over 20 years, at PTI, where he worked diligently as a driver, demonstrating a commitment to his work and the people he served.

Donald was a man who found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He cherished family gatherings filled with laughter and love, often bringing everyone together with the warmth of homemade Polish foods, which Donald loved partaking in. These memories are treasured by all who knew him, as they reflect the essence of his generous spirit.

In his leisure time, Donald was an avid sports enthusiast. He passionately supported the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Cleveland Browns, proudly displaying his team colors and engaging in discussions about game day performances with family and friends.

Donald leaves behind a legacy defined by his unwavering commitment to family, his love for community, and a profound appreciation for the simple joys of life. His memory will continue to live on in the hearts of those he leaves behind, reminding them of the importance of family, friendship, and the sweet moments shared together.

Those left to forever cherish his memory are his loving sons, Brandon Gates (Amanda) and Steven Gates; three beautiful grandchildren; siblings, Jim (Judy) Gates, Denise (Dale) Dutridge, Kim (Sam) Shible, Joseph (Kelly) Gates, Jane (Joe) Fry, John Gates, and Beverly (Kenneth) Miller; mother of Brandon, Robin Gates; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

Donald was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Jane Gates.

Family and friends may gather at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4150 West Laskey Road, Toledo, Ohio 43623, on Friday, September 6, 2024, from 4:00 pm until the time of services at 7:00 pm.
