Delores (Harris Stewart) Newton

May 26, 1930 — June 26, 2021

Delores (Harris Stewart) Newton was born May 26, 1930, at 559 ½ Indiana Avenue in Toledo, Ohio. She was the first daughter born to the union of Mr. Henry C. and Mrs. Gussie M. (Saunders) Harris. Delores was educated in the Toledo Public School System.

Delores Harris married Marwillies Stewart. During that union, two daughters were born: Elaine and Toni. When that union dissolved, she married Horace Newton. During that union, two more daughters were born: Krystal and Regina. The four of them were known as "Delores's Daughters". Horace and Delores were married until his home-going 24 years later. She wrote that "She remain[s] Mrs. Horace Newton."

Mrs. Newton held several jobs during different periods of her life: she provided childcare for families, she was an elevator operator for the Rupp & Boldmons Co., she worked at Buryl's Bridal Shop, the Hunt's and the Heinz's Tomato Factories, she was the No. 1 cook for the Toledo Day Nursery, she provided home nursing care, and she had been a clerk at her husband's store - H & J Carryout on Fernwood at Smead.

Mrs. Newton enjoyed gardening, canning, and baking cakes and breads. She also enjoyed dressing "The Girls" up for church.

Mrs. Newton "love(d) the LORD with all her heart and she loved her family". She said she loved "all people no matter: the Good, the Bad, the Beautiful, and the so-called Ugly". She wrote that "she loved fishing for souls and fishing in the river. She love(d) and prayed for her neighbor at 815 Mackow Dr." Mrs. Newton declared that "she was not perfect in action, but she tried". She added that "she had a sense of humor, sometimes".

Mrs. Newton was a member of Philip's Temple CME Church from the age of two until the age of forty-one. She gave her heart to the Lord at a very, very young age. Later, in the early 1970's, she met "the late Bishop William M. James. She joined St. James, The Armory COGIC where he taught her and her daughters how to live holy for the Lord. She prophesied by writing, "she did until she went to sleep in the Lord." Mrs. Newton was under the leadership of Bishop James until his death in 2000, and then his son, Dr. William James Jr., until the Lord sent her to assist her son William and daughter Elaine Lucas at Liberty Ministries where she became the Church Mother.

At different points in her Christian walk she was involved in various ministries including: the church choir, the Usher Board, the Missionaries, the Stewardess Board, a Sunday School Teacher, a Class Leader, a Bible School Worker, a Pastor's Aid Assistant, and a Prayer Leader.

Mrs. Newton was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry and Gussie Harris. She wrote, "Mother and Daddy went ahead of me to spend time with The Father before I get home". All seven of her brothers preceded her in death: Willie Roy, Eugene, Henry C. Jr. Donald Richard, John Edward, Wayne Milton, and Wilbert Roger. Two sisters also preceded her in death: Dorothy Jean Battle and JoAnn Harris. One beloved granddaughter, Meah Newton and Great-grandson: twin infant Micah John also preceded her in death. She wrote that "we'll have dinner together when we get there", "this is after a shouting good time U C my, my, my, when we all get to heaven what a time of rejoicing that will B but when we all C Jesus we will sing and shout the Victory". Then she wrote " I got carried away."
