David O. Roberts

David O. Roberts, age 78, of Springfield Twp. died Sunday, August 28, 2016, of non-alcoholic liver disease, Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis, surrounded by his loving family. David was born on June 9, 1938 in Toledo to Thomas D. and Theresa E. (Zeiler) Roberts.

David married Joanne Marie Westfall on October 9, 1965 and she preceded him in death on September 22, 1995. He retired from the Toledo Police Department as a Detective Lieutenant in 1990 after 30 years of service. David then became a caseworker for Lucas County Children Services for 14 years and after a short retirement, worked for the Lucas County Coroner's Office as an Investigator. David married Nancy J. Van Fleet on September 5, 1998.

In his younger years, David was an avid hunter and he continued to enjoy fishing and gardening. After retirement, Dave and Nancy enjoyed many trips with close friends, bus trips, dinners and movies with their group of retired Policeman and wives. He attended St. Vincent DePaul grade school, graduated from Central Catholic High School (1956) and received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Toledo (1976). David was a Marine Corp. veteran. In addition, he was a volunteer for the Claver House and the Feed Your Neighbor Program at St. Martin De Porres Catholic Church. David was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy J. Roberts; daughter, Lisa M. Switala (fiancé, Bryan Waugh) of Maumee; son, David K. Roberts of Eugene, OR; grandchildren, Nicholas, Trevor and Kara Switala of Maumee and Kalila and Silas Roberts of Eugene OR; stepchildren, Michael (Elizabeth) Van Fleet of Sparta, NJ: Jeffrey (Tanya) Van Fleet of Wake Forest, NC; Lynne (Lee) Higgins-Armstrong of Toledo, and Kelly Contenta of Las Vegas, NV; step grandchildren, Kelsey and Jillian Van Fleet of Sparta, NJ; Cole Higgins of Toledo and Alexander and Nathaniel Van Fleet of Wake Forest, NC; sister-in-law, Cheryl Lovejoy; brother-in-law, David (Judy) Walters; former brother and sister-in-law, Ronald and Barbara Bruce; nieces, Jennifer Grabarczyk and Robin Acino; nephews, Rick Walters, Ronald and Gregory Bruce; longtime special friends, Joel and Marjorie Kaminski, as well as, Dennis Cassin, Barbara Martin, Steven and Sharon Toth, Charlie Perdeau, Dale Sieske and Todd Switala.

David was preceded in death by his parents and twin brother, Donald, who died shortly after birth.

David was a loving husband, father, grandpa, papa and friend, who will be dearly missed.

David's family would like to thank the staff at the University of Michigan Hospital and St. Luke's Hospital Maumee, with special gratitude to Dr. Stephen Bazeley, Dr. David Zack and Dr. Hellan Kwon.

The family would also like to express their thankfulness to the Hospice of Northwest Ohio – Perrysburg.

The family will receive guests Friday, September 2, 2016 from 2:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the Newcomer Funeral Home, 4752 Heatherdowns Blvd., Toledo, (419-381-1900) where a Scripture Service will be recited at 7:00 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, September 3, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church 6149 Hill Ave, Toledo, Ohio.
