David T. Herzig

December 18, 1937 — July 3, 2022

David T. Herzig, age 84, of Toledo, passed away July 3, 2022 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio Toledo. He was born December 18, 1937 in Toledo to Carll and Isabel (Keir) Herzig. Dave graduated from Whitmer High School and attended the University of Toledo where he played the Coronet in the band.

Dave was a retired Master Sergeant with the Air National Guard and had active duty during the Berlin Crisis. When the Blizzard of '78 hit, Dave was called out to refuel helicopters that were going down I-75 to rescue people. He travelled to Arizona, Hawaii, Panama, Savannah, Las Vegas, England and Alpena with the National Guard. Upon retirement from the 180th in 1985, Dave's greatest thrill was going up in a trainer jet to Wisconsin where he did air to air re-fueling. He also went to the bombing range and got to take the stick on the way back.

Dave met Judy at a church gathering and were married September 16, 1961 at Hope United Methodist Church. He was a member of Hope United Methodist where he was active in the choir for over 55 years where he would also play the coronet on special occasions.

Dave was employed by the Sun Oil Company for 30 years, retiring July 1, 1997 as a Purchasing Agent.
He loved playing cards especially rummy (he played with his grandmother in his youth), euchre and bridge. Dave was always ready to go somewhere. He travelled to Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Ireland, Alaska and Hawaii. The last 18 years, Dave spent the winters in Florida where he excelled at Petanque, rode his bicycle and loved playing cards and bingo. Like a true Herzig, Dave enjoyed talking to anyone. The last two things that would hold Dave's attention were the Detroit Tigers and the Gaithers.

Dave played for the church softball team and also coached girls softball at Hawkins Elementary School.

In addition to his parents, David was also preceded in death by his brother, William Carll Herzig and sister, Barbara Benson. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Judith S. Herzig; daughters, Lisa (Jamie) Gill, Julie (Thomas) Saba and Gretchen (Tim Siebert) Herzig; grandchildren, Heather (Kelly) Lewis, Richelle (Patrick) Long, Ryan Gill, Heather Pogan, Autumn Goldman, Isabella Gill, Ashley Saba and Hannah Saba; great-grandchildren, Makenna Long, Peyton Long, Lidia Pogan, Livia Pogan and Lillian Saba.
