He was born on June 1, 1932 to Emarie Dock and Ignatius Bankowski in Toledo, Ohio at St. Vincent's Hospital. He attended Nazareth Hall Military Academy in Grand Rapids, Ohio and also attended Campion Jesuit High School in Prairie Du Chien, Wisconsin, graduating in 1950. Dave was a passionate musician, playing the clarinet since he was 9 years old. His favorite genre of music was big band, playing in many bands and orchestras, most recently the Maumee Community Band. After retiring, he worked at Penguin Music store repairing instruments. He passed along his love for music to his 7 children.
