David W. Alt

March 10, 1938 — December 22, 2024

Lambertville, Michigan

David W. Alt, a beloved coach, teacher, and family man, gained his wings on December 22, 2024, at the age of 86. He was born on March 10, 1938, in Toledo, Ohio, to the late Homer and Mary (Reynolds) Alt.

With a career that spanned decades, David took pride in teaching Physical Education at Toledo Public Schools until his retirement. Even then, he found joy in being active, golfing with his wife, Sandy and their many friends, and working as a golf ranger at Giant Oak Golf Course, where he shared his love for the game with others. Transitioning from player to mentor, David made an impact on the lives of many young athletes as a football and baseball coach at both Whitmer and Waite High Schools. His passion for encouragement led him to help establish the Whitmer and Waite Gymnastics Circus, a unique initiative that encouraged athleticism and involvement from all students to showcase their talents and learn gymnastics while emphasizing the importance of teamwork and creativity. David devoted his life to nurturing others, whether on the field, in the classroom, or at home. His passion for sports was evident from an early age. He made his mark at Whitmer High School, where he not only excelled as a baseball and football player but was later honored by being inducted into the school's Hall of Fame. After graduation, he continued his journey at Montana State University, contributing to their football legacy. Dave took over as Montana State’s quarterback early in the 1956 season (his freshman year) and helped lead the team to one of Montana State’s most successful seasons, earning a National Championship. His achievements did not go unnoticed, as he too earned the All-Rocky Mountain QB, 1956 and was inducted into the Hall of Fame along with his team in 2001, a testament to his dedication and work ethic. His son, Tobin, followed in his footsteps and was inspired to play football at Montana State University as well.

A man known for his sense of humor, David had a unique ability to make people laugh, brighten anyone’s day with a witty remark or playful teasing. He could remember jokes and stats like no other! Above all, he was deeply family-oriented. He cherished every moment spent with his loved ones, proudly taking on the role of a doting grandpa. His caring nature extended beyond family; many who knew him felt the warmth of his kindness and genuine interest in their well-being.

David is survived by his loving family who will forever hold his memories close to their hearts. He is remembered not only for his remarkable contributions to education and sports, but also for his ability to uplift everyone around him. Several of David’s past players have commented on how impactful he was to them and how he served as an influential role model.

David leaves behind a legacy of laughter, love, and inspiration, reminding us all of the profound impact one individual can have on the lives of so many. His spirit will continue to shine brightly in the stories shared and the fond memories cherished by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

Those left to forever cherish his memory are his loving wife, Sandy (Wiseley) Alt, whom he married on March 26, 1959; three children, Tobin (Sharon) Alt, Tracy (Dave) Coleman, and Stephanie (Armando) Fitz; grandchildren, Kendria (Zach), Kristin, Karla (Ryan), Kamryn, Daniel (Melissa), Derek (Mallory), Dillon, Matt, Amanda (Michael), Armando Jr., Carly, Victoria, and Bella; great grandchildren, Xander, Kelten, Gia, Blakely, Charlie, Corinne, Caleb, Sadie, Rowan; sister-in-law, Linda Alt; and very special nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by his foster parents whom were like another set of parents to him, Lewie and Della Shrode; two brothers, Homer Alt Jr. and William Alt; and a sister, Mary Mohr.
